The process of joining two or more flexible packaging webs together by using a bonding agent is lamination. Laminates improve the appearance and substrates barrier properties. In the food and non-food packaging industries, a great number of different technologies are available. From the paper extrusion coating laminating machine to the plastic extrusion coating laminating machine, the laminating machines have great command on the manufacturing industries.
The commonly used finishing layer for plywood, particleboard, wall panels and ceiling, wooden furniture, and MDF laminates. Materials are made by pressing thin layers together of flat paper and plastic resins. The upper layer of plastic or paper is printed with decorative patterns and colors.
Different types of laminates:
There are five main types of laminates.
- Industrial laminates:
These industrial laminates have high strength and are more resistant to wear and tear. This includes high-performance laminates which are antibacterial, fire retardant, and chemical resistant for applications like hospital and other.
- Decorative laminates:
In terms of finishing and patterns, decorative laminates have greater aesthetic appeal. These can be used for doing overlays the ornamentals on furniture. There are so many types of pf decorative laminates as well.
- Post formed laminates:
The post-formed laminates are flexible versions that are thinner than regular laminates. Usually used around to wrap tables, columns, etc.
- Compact laminates:
Fairly the thick compact laminates are self-supporting and do not need to be glued.
- High-pressure and low-pressure laminates:
The difference is only in pressure by which the laminate is applied. High-pressure usually use with plywood and low-pressure finds in MDF.
Colors and patterns:
There are wide varieties in patterns of laminates. Using laminates is the best option when you need to simulate the solid wood texture’s appearance and other natural materials. The laminates are available in many bright colors and funky motifs also.
Finishes of laminates:
There are arrays of finishes available, the most common are, medium to a high gloss, smooth and matte finishes. Wall finishes and furniture use texture laminates, which replicate the natural materials’ tactile feel. The popular laminates used textures include rustic wood, hand-scraped, and other leather finishes.
Fairly, laminates are durable and scratch-resistant. These laminates are more resistant to moisture, heat, and wear and tear when compared to other veneers and solid wood products. Moreover, the laminates are brittle materials, also prone to chipping.
Commercially, laminates are available in panels. Sheets and boards, all depend on the application type. The size of the sheet commonly available is around 8 feet by 4 feet approximately. Boards and wall panels are available in different sizes of squares or rectangles.
As you compare laminates and veneers as a wood finishing material. The laminates are cheaper than veneers. Moreover, laminated wooden flooring is an inexpensive and eco-friendly option.
The products which are laminated are easier to maintain and can last with few measures. For long-lasting results, dust the laminated surfaces regularly. You should clean it with a mildly wet cloth and use dry wipes with gentle strokes. Moreover, avoid using steel wool scrubber and abrasive cleansers on laminated products. You should protect the surface of laminated products from exposure to excess sunlight and water.
